Making Architecture: Wayfarer House
Join us for a journey into the making of Wayfarer House.
Located along the Atlantic coast of Wales, the home emerges from the hillside to form a self-sustainable plinth for family living. In a profound area of wilderness, stack rocks rise up from the sea, forming geological outposts and a safe haven for migrating birds. Small island outcrops act as Waypoints to the Wayfarer, in an otherwise abstract landscape of sky and sea.
The fireplace is established as a vertical anchor point to gather around. Like a mast it symbolises an infinite datum. The hearth is the heart of the home and the origin of warmth. Living spaces and a sheltered deck confront the view - while sleeping and ancillary spaces are protected behind the chimney monolith shielded from the wind and driving rain.
The definition of a Wayfarer is one who travels. The home symbolises the wind with its sharp edges and sail like forms. Floating freely above the ground as if to abandon the site, yet it should completely acknowledge its location, orientation and situation.
