Architects Journal - Sketchbook, Kristian Hyde
The AJ’s Sketchbook series showcases sketches and concept drawings by architects and designers. The article features a selection of drawings and sketches produced by Director of Hyde + Hyde Architects, Kristian Hyde. These cover many of our studio’s award-winning projects, both completed and in development across the world.
“The simple act of drawing by hand has always been our first instinctive use of a tool and picking up a pencil has become a subconscious act for me. The pencil is a humble object, yet so perfectly designed it can easily be lost in the task at hand.
According to the philosopher Martin Heidegger, objects in our daily experience often become background or 'invisible entities that we use without explicitly focusing on them.
For me, the invisible pencil and the subconscious act of drawing, along with time, are pathways to that feeling of flow that I seek in my work and life.
When drawing, I imagine being in a deep flow state, chasing a concept. Our ideas are underpinned by built meaning - understanding how our designs can embrace the client's life and the site, to evoke a deeply personal subcontext and bring their memories to life in built form.
The drawings included here are expressive moments in this process, capturing our search for emotional ideas for our clients around the world. We use drawings to freely explore what emotional connections might inspire architecturally.
Knowing you may come out of this process empty handed is always a possibility - highly probable, in fact. But, occasionally, with a little determination, you land the prize of an idea.”
